Setting Up the Correct DNS Records

If you’re looking for the right procedure to setting up the correct DNS records for your web or mail server, then you have reached the right page.

Procedure To Set Up A DNS Record For A Web Server

  • First, you need to purchase your own domain name. Usually, many people simply add a word to their Exchange server and expect it to work.
  • Now, you need to test the DNS host records on your Windows computer.
  • To do so, open the CMD window with admin rights.
  • In the CMD window, type nslookup followed by your web address and tap Enter.
  • Now, your DNS record’s server name, server address, and your web address will be displayed.

Set Up A DNS Record For An Email Server

  • First, you need to create an A Record for your mail server.
  • Make sure that you have an MX (Mail Exchange) Record that points to the A Record.
  • Now, you need to test the MX Records using the nslookup command in the CMD window.
  • To set up an Email Server, you should also need a PTR record.
  • Note: A Record: converts a name into an IP address; PTR Record: converts an IP address back to the name.
  • Ask your ISP to provide the PTR records of your mail server.
  • Now, test the PTR records using the nslookup command.
  • If everything is right, continue the process.
  • Finally, you need an SPF record to set up the correct DNS for your mail server.
  • If you don’t have the SPF record, then create one.
  • After creating the SPF record, test your PTR records again.

That’s it. You have successfully configured the setting up the correct DNS records.
